Mom’s Old Vase

Written for a friend. Her challenge was, “Write about inanimate objects with feelings” (or something like that.) Unfortunately, I’ve been lazy. I gave it to her weeks late, and I’m posting it here weeks after I gave it to her. (And I’m a little embarrassed because it’s shorter than the cute little story about fuzzy spiders she wrote for me.)

Mom’s old vase was white with a long neck. Christine had inherited it from her mother after she died and it was so full of her memories that she was afraid to throw it away. On Saturday, when her boyfriend brought flowers, she told him, “Wait a bit. I’m going to put them in Mom’s old vase,” even though it was already full. The red flowers and the pink and orange flowers looked the best in the vase. Continue reading →

Samuel woke up at six that Saturday, as though it was any regular working day for him. On his right, he checked his alarm clock and saw that it was not set. On his left, Adelaide lay with her back turned towards him, warmly breathing in her sleep. So she did get home last night, he thought to himself. He had forgotten what it was that kept her out all night. It was Saturday. They used to spend Saturdays together, alone, he thought. Continue reading →

All mathematicians looked alike. They’re all men, for one. They’re all clean-cut, blond, plaid shirt tucked into blue jeans, and belt, shoes, walking stiffly down the hallways and pushing up their glasses before they slip too far down their noses. Theodore had dark hair. It curled aimlessly over his ears and neck. It was what attracted Diane to him in the first place.

The room was dark when Cassandra walked in. The only light came from Theodore’s desk. He was working late again. His research proposal was due in less than a week. Yesterday it was Cassandra who was working late. Her proposal was also due soon. She sat at her desk on the other side of campus. Theodore had gone to visit her. She had turned him away.

Michael Calder and Peter Cunning were close friends since they were young. They had lived in the same neighbourhood since Peter moved in at eight years old – it was the same neighbourhood they lived in now. When they were both 19, they made a bet to see who would marry first. Peter got married to Nancy, a nice girl he had met in college. Then Michael met Tina. For losing the bet, Michael treated Peter to a 12 oz. steak dinner. Michael then made another bet on that night, to see who would have a child first. This time, Michael won, gloating.

Her boyfriend was an astronaut. Whenever he came back from a trip, she would ask him:

“Did you bring me back a piece of the moon?”

And he would answer:

“No, but I took some pictures. Wanna see?”

…So it’s no wonder why they broke up after five years.

Suzette stared lovingly at her beloved sitting across the table from her. It was Sunday, so they were on a date. She raised a finger and traced along the outline of his chin, gently lifting off a track of bread crumbs. Hmm! His curly brown hair bobbed up and down as he munched his sandwich, and he nodded as if agreeing with something,…the sauce? Or the water he tried to gulp down, with a cloud of…ick! – flowing from his mouth into the glass. And the sticky little finger prints that he left behind after he set the glass down. He wiped his mouth with the back of the other hand, the one holding his sandwich. A piece of it fell onto the table cloth. No, no, use the napkin! It lay nicely folded at the corner of the table, utterly neglected….Suzette came to a sudden realization.

“Jonathan’s a bastard.”

“Is he?”

Beatrice smiled sweetly. Solomon looked sideways at her through the fingers of his right hand. How pretty she looked, wearing her black wool coat and black wool hat that covered her thin yellow hairs, sipping black coffee in the dim lighting, carefully and painfully, he thought. They were sitting together by the window of some coffee shop somewhere where the light seemed gloomiest, as the night had a tendency to creep in through the windows and steal the light away.
